Roosterkoek (pronounced roos-ter-kook) is a traditional South African bread roll, cooked over hot coals on a grill. The name literally means “grill cake” in Afrikaans. Milk tart is one of South Africa’s most loved desserts. It’s a creamy, custard-like tart made with milk, eggs, sugar, and a hint of cinnamon. The filling is light and silky, set in a pastry crust (sometimes without one), and always dusted with ground cinnamon on top. Think of it as South Africa’s version of a custard pie — but lighter, smoother, and often enjoyed with a cup of tea or coffee. Koesisters are a Cape Malay sweet treat, different from the more widely known “koeksisters.” They’re small, spiced dough balls (with cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and anise) that are fried until golden, then soaked in syrup and rolled in coconut. Soft, sticky, and fragrant, they’re usually enjoyed on a Sunday morning with family. It’s like a doughnut with a warm, spiced twist and a burst of sweetness.
The evening wraps up around 9:00 pm, leaving you with new flavors, new friends, and a genuine taste of local life.
